I read your article in AV and laughed at first, because I had a Oppo 83 at the time. I had to sell it and bought a Sammy 3600 just for filler untill I decide to get either a Denon A1 or Marantz UD 9004. Boy was I shocked at how good the Sammy is right out of the box. I have to say you guys sure hit the nail with the hammer right on. Te sound of the 3600 is much better than the Oppo. One quirk that bothers me is if you hit pause and let it stay there for 15 minutes, the unit "freezes" and I haave to power down then on again. The Oppo has a much, much better remote. But for only $350, who cares?  I am also very interested in your mods, but what are they? All other companys are charging $500 to $1200. Please don't get any ideas. :)
